ntegrative InSight was launched in summer of 2006, with the intention to use all of the traditional MBA tools that I had learned, to develop a business teaching other people the cutting edge Yoga Therapy tools that I had learned. As it turned out, Integrative InSight evolved into something much more.
You see, when I approached this as a business, I fell back on those old ways that I knew so well from Corporate America … looking around to see what others were doing in both the Yoga and Meditation fields; trying it for myself; only to eventually realize that they did not fit. Though I aligned myself with places that had huge mailing lists to support me in marketing my classes, I was caught up in the typical marketing cycle having to generate marketing buzz for my next offering, even before I had taught the current one. I was miserable, stressed, and on the brink of collapsing. Worse, I had unknowingly re-created the same pattern of “excellence” that I had found myself in when I was in Corporate America … doing everything myself, always behind because I had to constantly look ahead for my next class, unable to stop and breathe for fear of losing even more ground. I was sacrificing myself on the altar of my TO DO list, which is a vengeful, wrathful task master. This time, it was insidious because it was wrapped in the cloak of wanting to serve others with the tools that I had learned.
In 2009, I had a series of physical wake-up calls that confirmed that something had to change. In case you want details, I write about this in my chapter titled, Say “Yes” to Me, in the best selling book, Speaking Your Truth: Courageous Stories from Inspiring Women. I knew without a doubt that I could not continue in my Overworked Overwhelmed Overachiever pattern. At its heart, Say “Yes” to Me was my New Year’s Resolution for 2010, Revealing the Hidden Cost of Unconscious Tension which grew into a personal mantra. “Would you be willing to say “Yes” to me?” was a question I would ask myself daily … Me, being that innermost part of myself … my Spirit, if you will … that continued to be the collateral damage in my attempts to sacrifice myself for the sake of my business. Slowly, life began to change … just by asking that simple question.
What emerged is a business model that has been recreated on commitments to life-enrichment, genius, support and community:
LIFE-ENRICHMENT – does this choice deplete me in any way? If yes, the internal warning signals “You are firmly on the road to Overwhelm! Stop, breathe and see if another route emerges.” True life-enrichment means that Integrative InSight gives and receives positive energy to everyone involved … including myself.
GENIUS – am I operating from my zone of genius (a concept coined by Gay Hendricks in The Big Leap)? “My genius is that I am trailblazer. I see what’s hidden – the hidden potential of what can be, as well as the hidden pain of what keeps us stuck. I forge a path through my example and invite others to follow. I light the way through writing, speaking, teaching and coaching.” I’ve come to realize that life’s too short for me to waste time on things that others can do for me. So I partner with others, whose genius supports me in spending more and more time in my own genius.
SUPPORT – Face it, trailblazers are accustomed to being out there, alone at the front of the pack. It is what we do best. Top it off with the reality that I am a recovering Overworked Overwhelmed Overachiever and that’s a recipe for a disaster. Seems really obvious, but it took a long time to realize that. Needless to say, support ties in with partnering with others, so that their genius can support mine. My motto now is “Support creates Ease” and with it comes a huge release of the tension that I unknowingly build within my body (check out my video if you want to learn more about the hidden cost of unconscious tension).
COMMUNITY – Relationships underlie everything I do. I share with the intention of helping others, and find that ripples out because those who come across my programs are eager to share with others. This to me is the fundamental nature of community … wanting to help when we can. Expanding Integrative InSight’s internet footprint using the latest technology finally allows me to create an energy exchange (a monetary thank you) around this sharing.
SUSTAINABILITY – There are two aspects to sustainability that are important to me.
How can I market myself or create content in a way that I invest time and energy in it once, and then it returns the investment in dividends? What this means is that I seek out ways to leverage my time as I consider my Energy (Spirit) to be a precious resource, rather than an expendable commodity. If it can be automated, perfect! If it can be captured in a video that can be posted in multiple places, perfect! If it can be captured in an audio recording that can be used in different programs, perfect!
Deliberately sharing those tools that allow you to leverage your time and Energy. In other words, it isn’t enough that a technique works well What I want to know and test out myself is “Can you take it on the go, sliding it in whenever your schedule permits?” That to me is critical because there is more likelihood that you’ll continue using the technique if it fits into your existing schedule, than requiring you to change your schedule to fit to it.
These are principles that are important to me. Integrative InSight will grow as I grow because all that I learn, both personally and professionally, I feed back into this business with the intention to share it with you.
