Savor Your Life

Savor Your Life
T

hat’s a rainbow that showed up one day beyond my back yard.  I include it here because it depicts those “nectar” moments that Life provides … those sweet moments where Life invites you to slow down, take a deep breath, and simply savor.  If you’re like me, when you’re in Overworked Overwhelmed Overachiever mode, your attention becomes hyper-focused on your TO DO list … your first reaction is to say “Hold on! I’m coming!  Give me a few minutes to get this done first!”  But then the nectar moment may be gone.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that being able to savor life was an unexpected side benefit of the Body-Focused Meditation that I teach.  Better yet, if I chose to do so, those nectar moments could actually become another way to meditate!  You see, for a long time, I mistakenly thought that meditation is just a Mind thing.  And yes, that is the definition with many styles of meditation.

With Body-Focused Meditation, all of your five senses are automatically engaged in the process simply because you choose to bring your Body into the equation.  I like to think of my five senses as messengers … alerting me when there is something worth stopping and noticing so that I can get my nose out of my TO DO List.  Ultimately it is about mindfulness, but I hesitate to use that word only because many people equate Meditation mindfulness with the vipassana style of meditation.  What I teach comes from Yoga Therapy, where your body is respected as a wise friend that has been an active participant in every emotion, thought, and sensation that you’ve experienced in your life … a colony of respected wisdom communicating with you about what you are experiencing right now … in this moment. By learning to listen to your body more closely, with more care and compassion, you enlist an ally who has always been there for you 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

Welcoming In Your Body
When you consciously choose to step away from your TO DO List and get away from the figuring out, the scheduling, and the “What If” scenarios that are running circles in your head, you get to appreciate those nectar moments that surround each and every one of us.  Don’t get me wrong!  This isn’t about never getting anything done!  One of my secret joys will always be crossing an item off my TO DO List!  But face it … you already know what Life is like when you are ruled by your TO DO List … you’re seeking to change something … that’s why you’re reading this right now.

Body-Focused Meditation is about developing the presence of mind to be able to notice those nectar moments … those moments that I could barely see before because I was so buried in my TO DO List.  The simple fact Programs of noticing opens the door to choices.  Ultimately that is what I wanted for myself … and that is what I offer to you … CHOICE.  I can still choose to make my TO DO List a priority, but now I can also choose when it is not priority.  I don’t have to give up anything … I choose to live my Life with a full spectrum of choices!

And it all starts with a yearning to savor your life …
